  • Maximum length of gas pipe from meter to boiler?

Posted by Martin Turner on February 21, 2023 at 11:05 pm

I have a domestic gas meter located at one side of my building and my boiler/cooker (only 2 gas devices) on the other side of the building. There is currently an external 28mm gas pipe from meter to the boiler which is approx 25m and a further 5m to the gas cooker. My gas engineer is saying that the installation is non compliant (BS6891) and that I must get the meter moved to be close to the boiler which will cost a huge amount of money as I would need to dig a 25m channel through concrete and get Cadent to then move the meter. Is this correct? Is there another lower cost solution (eg: larger gas pipe?) Thanks for your advice.

Hi, a 28 mm gas pipe should be ok depending on the output of boiler and cooker with a 30 kw demand.

And 28mmm pipe pressure loss will be 0.0212 per metre.

You should not get more than a one mili bar pressure drop when appliance running.

At 25 metres from metre this will give you a drop of 0.53 and will be fine.

You need to look at output of appliances

    Regards,

    Nick

Nick, thanks, that’s really helpful. I have a 37kW Vaillant boiler plus 29kW max (4 burners plus oven) cooker. Will the 28mm pipework from domestic meter still be sufficient?

Hi what is the output of the cooker?
